I have $5,000 saved. How do I make it actually earn?

Brutal truth: $5k invested in any index fund earns you maybe $400/year. That's not life-changing, but the system you build around it is.

Run this order:

1. $1,000 emergency cash. Boring, but if your car breaks you don't want to liquidate at the wrong moment. High-yield savings, not crypto.

2. $500 on a skill that earns. Not a course on "passive income." A real skill someone pays for: cold email copywriting, video editing, Meta ads, plumbing certs, AWS cert. $5k → $500 well-spent → $1-3k/month side income inside 90 days if you actually do the work.

3. $3,500 in a broad index fund (VTI or VOO). Not stock picking. Not options. Set it, don't check it for a year.

The $5k is not the asset. The skill you buy with $500 and the discipline to leave $3,500 alone, those are the assets.

Avoid: meme stocks, anything a friend pitched you, "guaranteed" anything, leveraged crypto, day trading courses. Every one of those takes your $5k and gives you a story to tell at parties about why you have $0.
